Initiatives such as ‘Formentera Produce’ and ‘Formentera Sembra Futur’, or the promotion of a new biosecurity protocol for the protection of the lizard in the Lesser Pitiusa, stand out among this year’s actions.
Eivissa 01/16/2025 – The environmental foundation I bizaPreservation has made public its 2025 Action Plan, an ambitious initiative that seeks to address the main environmental challenges of Ibiza and Formentera through specific actions aimed at the protection and sustainability of the natural environment. This plan, which includes a specific provision to expand activities in the Lesser Pitiusa, has a specific budget for projects of close to 700,000 euros and includes innovative measures in its five strategic programmes: biodiversity, local production, circular economy, marine environment and the Sustainability Observatory. “The 2025 Action Plan is the result of an exhaustive process of analysis and collaboration with experts, institutions and local communities , which has allowed us to identify the most urgent priorities in terms of sustainability,” explains Inma Saranova, director of IbizaPreservation.
Among the new features this year, the launch of ‘Formentera Produce’ stands out, following the path of the already consolidated ‘Ibiza Produce’ programme. Within this, the ‘Eivissa & Formentera Sembren Futur’ project will be developed, which will facilitate the planting of 1,000 trees. native plants on farms to regenerate soils and landscapes. Also, for the first time, IbizaPreservation will launch a Sembra Futur Forum, an initiative aimed at young people that seeks to foster interest in professional careers linked to the rural sector . It is also worth mentioning that this year IbizaPreservation is committed to promoting a new biosecurity protocol, developed by Cofib thanks to a participatory process led by IbizaPreservation in 2023 with key entities, to prevent the translocation of snakes between Ibiza and Formentera through prevention and early eradication strategies in the port of La Savina.
Continuing in the field of local biodiversity protection, IbizaPreservation will carry out the expansion of the ‘Protegim Ses Sargantanes’ project, which seeks to prevent the extinction of the Pitiusa lizard by installing snake traps both in protected areas and on farms. As part of this reinforcement, an initiative will be launched to create a mouse breeding nucleus that guarantees the provision of necessary live bait. In addition, community awareness activities will be developed through educational workshops and teaching materials.
The circular economy also features prominently in this year’s plan. For this reason, IbizaPreservation will be carrying out a joint project with its sister entities, Mallorca Preservation and Menorca Preservation , called ‘Weaving the Future: Alliance for the Preservation of the Balearic Islands’ , a new initiative that will address the problem of marine waste through a pioneering study on the state of the seabed in the Balearic Islands. This project also includes the creation of a circular crafts network which will seek to transform recycled materials into unique products, promoting a more sustainable economic model. In addition, the children’s show ‘The Magic of Recycling’, which promotes recycling awareness, will be expanded for the first time to Formentera, Mallorca and Menorca. Another new feature within the Circular Economy programme is the development of a shared energy consumption pilot project, an innovative initiative that will seek to optimise energy resources and promote more sustainable use of energy on the islands.
Within the 2025 Action Plan, IbizaPreservation is also strengthening its commitment to already consolidated projects such as Plastic Free: Zero Waste Alliance Ibiza and Formentera , which promotes the elimination of single-use plastics, and ‘Kilometers of Plastic for Iris’ , which involves young people in cleaning and environmental awareness activities.
In the field of the circular economy, it will also continue to promote projects such as Zero Waste Chefs EU , funded by the European Erasmus+ programme, and ‘Gastronomic Activists’ , through workshops that promote the fight against food waste. Another project that will be expanded in 2025 is ‘Butterflies for Biodiversity’.
, started at the end of 2024 as part of Ibiza Produce. This initiative is focused on the protection of essential pollinators , such as butterflies, through habitat improvement and resource optimisation, playing a fundamental role in environmental conservation. As regards the marine environment, IbizaPreservation will continue the annual monitoring of Posidonia oceanica meadows in various sites in Ibiza, as well as a study to shed light on shark and ray populations. in the Pitiusan waters, both carried out by the GEN-GOB. It will also continue to promote the The Calant Xarxes Alliance , which works to improve the sustainability of the fisheries of the Balearic Islands, is also working to promote the marine environment of Ibiza and Formentera.
In addition, in the area of dissemination and research, the organisation will continue to be an active part of the promoting team of the Ibiza and Formentera Marine Forum , which will celebrate its seventh edition this year, consolidating itself as a key space for reflection and action in favour of the environment. From the organisation, its director, Inma Saranova , assures that the 2025 Action Plan combines science, innovation and citizen participation to guarantee the preservation of the natural environment of Ibiza and Formentera: “Our mission is to continue contributing to laying the foundations for a sustainable development model that protects our natural heritage and guarantees a healthy future for future generations”, she stresses.
