IbizaPreservation recruits “culinary activists” with a new guide to reducing food waste

This visual resource is part of a project funded by the Consell of Ibiza and aims to promote sustainable habits and waste reduction in the home

Ibiza, September 26, 2024 – As part of the project ‘Let’s avoid food waste: Zero Waste Culinary Activists’, IbizaPreservation has launched a new visual guide to offer practical tools that allow citizens to reduce food waste in their homes and promote sustainable habits.

The guide, made up of a series of infographics, arises from a cycle of training workshops given to several local associations such as the Ibiza and Formentera Association of Relatives of People with Mental Illness (APFEM), the Cala de Bou Women’s Association, the Ses Figueretes Neighborhood Association (AAVV), the Ibiza Senior Citizens’ Home and the Asperger Ibiza and Formentera Association, from where the participants have contributed their own advice for inclusion in the guide. The project has been funded by the Department of the Environment of the Consell of Ibiza.

This Guide for Culinary Activists aims to present in an accessible and educational way a series of practices to avoid food waste and promote leftover cooking . One of the main messages that appear in this document is the need to reuse leftovers : “Think before throwing away: use leftovers. Browse and think about what you can do to use the leftovers you generate.” In addition, the guide includes sustainable recipes such as strawberry vinegar or vegetable kimchi, which teach how to use ingredients that are usually thrown away, turning them into nutritious and tasty homemade products.

The infographics also highlight alarming data on food waste both at European and Spanish level, highlighting that ” in the EU, about 88 million tons of food are wasted per year, while in Spain we throw away 7.7 million tons of food each year.” With these figures in mind, the Guide suggests sustainable alternatives to reduce waste on a daily basis, such as buying in bulk or choosing local products without packaging . The composting process, a practice that can be implemented at home to reintegrate organic waste into nature, is another of the topics that appear in the infographics.

The launch of this guide seeks to “extend the impact of the training workshops to a wider audience, facilitating access to clear and concise information on how to transform consumption habits.” “The Guide for Culinary Activists aims to be a useful tool for anyone to implement small but significant actions in their home. We want citizens to be aware that their daily decisions can make a big difference in the fight against food waste,” explained Jordi Salewski , coordinator of the Circular Economy programme at IbizaPreservation.

With this initiative, the foundation seeks to encourage a change of mindset in the community, promoting the reduction of food waste and the adoption of more responsible consumption habits. The infographics, which will be shared through social networks and on the ibizapreservation.org website, seek to inspire the population to become Zero Waste Culinary Activists, leading the change towards more conscious and sustainable eating.
