The environmental foundation will allocate 15,000 euros to finance the planting of up to 500 specimens on farms in Ibiza
Ibiza, October 24, 2024 – The IbizaPreservation foundation is launching the second call for its ‘Eivissa Sembra Futur’ project with a budget of 15,000 euros , more than double the amount allocated in 2024. Framed within the Ibiza Produce program, this initiative is aimed at the island’s farms and aims to support the planting of up to 500 fruit trees , betting on crop diversification and the economic sustainability of the farms. Interested farmers can send their applications until November 13, 2024, and the selection of the projects will be announced on the 18th of the same month.
The project seeks not only to diversify agricultural production , but also to promote soil recovery and help local farmers adapt their crops to changing climatic conditions, the environmental foundation explains. “With this increase in budget, we want more farmers to join the initiative and promote an agriculture that is not only profitable, but also improves local biodiversity and contributes to making farms more resilient to climate change, thus contributing to the economic and ecological development of the island ,” highlights Jordi Salewski , coordinator of Ibiza Produce.
Call for 2025
‘Eivissa Sembra Futur’ will offer funding of 30 euros for each tree , covering the costs of purchase, tutors, protectors and the planting hole. Applicants will be eligible for grants to plant between 20 and 250 trees , which is equivalent to grants of between 600 and 7,500 euros.
Although it is not a mandatory requirement, proposals that include the planting of local varieties, organic production and the adoption and/or use of climate change resilient measures will be positively valued. In addition, those plots that are willing to participate in the project to protect the Pitiusa lizard on IbizaPreservation farms , by installing traps to capture snakes, will be prioritized.
In 2024, the first edition of the project allowed the planting of 234 fruit trees on 11 farms, with an investment of 7,000 euros . “Species such as carob trees, apricot trees, olive trees, fig trees and almond trees were planted, demonstrating the interest of local farmers in diversifying their crops and improving the sustainability of their farms,” explains Salewski.
With the increase in the budget for 2025, IbizaPreservation seeks to continue supporting the agricultural sector and promote more sustainable practices adapted to climate challenges.
