As part of World Recycling Day, celebrated this Friday, ‘The Magic of Recycling’ teaches young people how they can help care for the environment
Jasmine Shafran and Mara Escandell, students of the Ibiza School of Arts, were named the winners of the ‘Upcycling’ contest organised by the local non-profit organisation
This morning, Can Ventosa Theatre hosted the performance of ‘The Magic of Recycling’, a children’s show organised by IbizaPreservation and the Ibiza Magic Association (AMIF), in collaboration with the band Depeche Mode, among others. The aim is to “raise awareness among students in a fun and educational way about the importance of recycling and caring for the environment,” explained Inma Saranova, director of the environmental foundation.
As part of the activities scheduled for World Recycling Day, taking place this Friday, 17th May, a total of 450 children from Year 5 and Year 6 at the schools Sa Blanca Dona, Santa Eulària, Poeta Villangómez, Sant Carles, Morna International College, Nostra Senyora De Jesús, and Mestral had the opportunity to enjoy this interactive performance focused on the need to “protect the planet.” The show aims to “teach children to respect the seven key Rs (7R) of sustainability: reduce, reuse, recycle, repair, rethink, reject, and recover through magic.”
“At IbizaPreservation, we believe that raising awareness among young people should be both engaging and fun. Through this initiative, we aim to demonstrate that reducing waste isn’t a magic trick; it’s something everyone can incorporate into their daily lives,” emphasised Saranova. She further highlighted that “recycling is merely the final step in a broader series of actions related to the 7Rs that we must begin practising if we want to create a prosperous and happy future for these children.”
Dantés Junior, from the Ibiza Magic Association, shared his enthusiasm for the initiative, saying, “Magic is all about inspiring wonder for those in front of you, and this project is filled with that same excitement and passion.”
With magicians Dantés and Dantés Junior leading the children through the story, ‘The Magic of Recycling’ combines tricks and educational games to teach young audiences, in simple terms, sustainable practices they can adopt in their daily lives. The goal is to inspire them to become “the heroes and heroines the world needs” while making a positive impact on the environment.
The dangers of ‘fast fashion’
During the performance, IbizaPreservation also announced the names of the winners of an “Upcycling” competition. This contest is part of a broader initiative carried out among students at the Ibiza School of Arts in collaboration with Depeche Mode and the watch brand Hublot, aimed at raising awareness about the “issues associated with plastics and fast fashion.”
“Given the significant role of the fashion industry in the global environmental crisis, being the second most polluting industry in the world, we aim to educate the young people at the Ibiza School of Arts about how so-called ‘fast fashion’ negatively contributes to climate change and how this industry can and must improve,” emphasised the director of IbizaPreservation, who was wearing one of the designs that participated in the competition.
Jasmine Shafran won in the fashion category, while Mara Escandell took home the award for best trophy, the design of which will be presented as the prize during the upcoming annual awards gala for Conservation Collective, a global network of environmental foundations of which IbizaPreservation is a part, on 22nd May in London. Both winners were also presented with gift cards from La Sirena.
The performance of ‘The Magic of Recycling’ concluded by emphasising the importance of being “responsible towards the environment,” encouraging the young audience to “share what they have learned about recycling and sustainability with their friends and family and to become active agents of change in their communities.”
Depeche Mode supports these and other initiatives worldwide to raise awareness about plastic pollution through their charitable collaboration with Hublot as part of their Memento Mori world tour. The funds are channelled through Conservation Collective. Today’s activity also received support from the Ibiza Town Hall, Morna International College, Trasmapi, the restaurant Oli, Soul Water, Fundación Pacha, La Sirena, and OD Hotels.
