The environmental foundation celebrates this anniversary on June 8 and 9 with two days that include free activities in Formentera and technical training in Santa Eulària
Ibiza – June 4, 2025 – The Ibiza and Formentera Conservation Foundation (IbizaPreservation) will celebrate World Oceans Day with free activities on June 8 and 9. The events will include a marine outreach workshop on the beach, as well as paddle surfing and snorkeling in Formentera , and a training session for marine professionals in Santa Eulària . The initiative is in collaboration with the Formentera Council , Whitesand Solutions , and the Balearic Foundation.
Coinciding with the anniversary, which this year the United Nations is celebrating under the slogan “Ocean Wonders: Conserving What Sustains Us,” the first day will take place on Sunday, June 8th in Formentera. The activity will begin at 10:00 a.m. in front of the Whitesand Surf School in Illetes. Participants will paddleboard to a nearby islet, where they will snorkel to identify fish and then attend a marine workshop . “The initiative has been so successful that we’ve had to increase the number of places, and even so, there are people on the waiting list,” explained Inma Saranova , director of IbizaPreservation.
Then, at 12:00 , the environmental foundation, a member of the Plastic Free Ibiza and Formentera alliance , will organize a beach cleanup in Illetes open to the public , in which anyone interested can participate without prior registration.
The second day will take place on Monday, June 9th , with a technical training session aimed at staff from the Ibizan authorities, environmental specialists, and professionals in the field of marine management. The event will be held at the Santa Eulària Yacht Club as part of the IbizaPreservation Blue Crime Classroom at the Universitat Jaume I in Castellón . The training will address the management of invasive species—with special attention to Rugulopterix —and the legal protection of Posidonia oceanica . Those interested can register by sending an email to: aulacriminalidadazul@uji.es .
On World Oceans Day, the United Nations seeks to highlight the importance of the ocean , which covers more than 70% of the planet and is an essential source of life, while also warning about its deterioration . “With 90% of large marine fish species depleted, we are extracting more from the ocean than it can replenish ,” the international organization warns.
In this way, IbizaPreservation joins this international event which, according to its director, Inma Saranova, “celebrates the wonder that the ocean inspires in us on a day that invites us to protect the sea through decisions motivated by curiosity and a commitment to the common good.”
