Nearly 30 people participated this morning in a day of paddleboarding, snorkeling, and beach cleanup in Ses Illetes (Formentera), as part of World Oceans Day. The activity sought to raise awareness about the importance of protecting the marine environment through a fun and educational approach.

The initiative was supported by the Formentera Council and the local Whitesand Surf school. Participants paddled to l’Illa d’en Forn, a small nearby islet, where they snorkeled to observe the area’s marine biodiversity.

“It’s a pleasure to welcome families who want to practice sports consciously, in this environment that we should all take care of,” said Daisee Aguilera, CEO and director of Whitesand Surf.

The day concluded with a beach cleanup open to the public, during which 14 kilos of waste were collected, including a work helmet, three drums, and one kilo of plastic bottle caps. “These cleanups have great awareness-raising value because they bring the waste problem into the public eye and raise real awareness of how our daily decisions affect the sea,” emphasized Inés Roig, technical specialist at Ibiza Preservation.

The environmental foundation explained that this activity is part of its commitment as members of Plastic Free: Ibiza and Formentera Zero Waste Alliance, with the goal of promoting more sustainable habits among citizens.

“We are very pleased with the response to the activity. Places filled up quickly, and we had to expand them. Seeing so many people, including children, enjoying the sea and connecting with its value and fragility reminds us why it is so important to continue promoting these types of initiatives,” Roig concluded.

The event was held under the theme proposed by the United Nations for this year: “Ocean Wonders: Conserving What Sustains Us.”
