Environmental foundation partners with young Ibicencan muralist to create temporary art installation on the ramparts of Dalt Vila on 17th May
Ibiza, 14/03/24 – In the firm belief that art, heritage and the environment can form a powerful combination in raising awareness about the need to reduce waste, IbizaPreservation has launched a campaign to collect plastic bottle tops that will be turned into a giant mural in Dalt Vila this coming World Recycling Day, which falls on 17th May.
The foundation is partnering with Maya Vericad, a young Ibicencan artist specialising in murals, as well as the Ibiza Town Hall to create the temporary installation. Inspired by the sculptural work of a well-known artist in Ibiza, the mural will be created on the Baluard de Santa Llúcia on the Renaissance ramparts of the capital.
“World Recycling Day presents the perfect opportunity to raise environmental awareness in the community. Doing so in a World Heritage Site, such as Ibiza, highlights the importance of preserving both our cultural heritage and the environment,” explained Inma Saranova, executive director of IbizaPreservation. “This mural will represent just a small proportion of the amount of plastic discarded on our island and the need to not only recycle properly, but also put an end to our throwaway culture. We also want this union of art and sustainability to inspire the community to explore new artistic expressions and give new life to our waste.”
The campaign is part of a series of initiatives and projects funded by Depeche Mode. In collaboration with the luxury watch brand Hublot, and as part of their Memento Mori world tour, the band is supporting initiatives that address plastic pollution all around the world. The funds are being channelled through Conservation Collective, a global network of environmental foundations, including IbizaPreservation.
In order to engage the community, the foundation seeks to encourage active participation by inviting all residents of the island to collect their plastic bottle tops and donate them to the project. Additionally, volunteers of all ages are encouraged to help collect the items as well as joining in with the creation of the art installation itself.
While the initiative is open to all, IbizaPreservation is particularly calling for bars and restaurants on the island to collect their plastic bottle tops – especially those in the Marina area. The foundation is also reaching out to local schools so that children can get involved and learn from the project.
Thanks to the collaboration of La Sirena/Art Ibiza, plastic bottle tops can be deposited in special containers in the following stores: Avinguda d’lgnasi Wallis, 6, Eivissa; Carrer del Bisbe Abad y Lassierra, 20, Eivissa; Carretera Playa den Bossa, s/n; Carrer del Caló, 111, Cala de Bou; Calle General Balanzat, 9, Sant Antoni; Carrer de Marià Riquer Wallis, 6, Santa Eulária; y Carrer de Sant Jaume, 54, Santa Eulària.
Additionally, the Town Hall has placed additional containers at the Can Ventosa library, the Mercat Nou and CETIS building in Ibiza Town.
After the event, the bottle tops will be recycled, and a large portion donated to a local company that promotes a circular economy and will use the items as raw material.
The deadline to donate bottle tops is 1st May. Anyone interested in getting involved, whether by collecting bottle tops or helping to create the mural, can contact the foundation via email at info@ibizapreservation.org.
