IbizaPreservation is financing the research by GEN-GOB research which has recently finished collecting data
Ibiza, 08-06-22 – Highlighting the need for empirical data about the marine environment on World Oceans Day, IbizaPreservation has announced its partnership with GEN-GOB in a study of the state of the Posidonia Oceanica meadows in Cala Vedella.
The environmental foundation is contributing €5,500 this year to the GEN-GOB project, which was first launched in 2019 with the support of the beach concessionaires of the municipality of Sant Josep de Sa Talaia.
“Thanks to the economic contribution of IbizaPreservation, we can continue our research work on the meadows of Cala Vedella in order to study their evolution over four consecutive years,” said Xisco Sobrado, head of the Marine Area of GEN-GOB.
“Cala Vedella is in a delicate environmental situation due to the multitude of uses and pressures that affect it”, said Sobrado, who added that, “one of the greatest agents of degradation is caused by the anchoring of boats and the loss of water quality during the summer season.”
Inma Saranova, the executive director of IbizaPreservation, highlighted the key role that Posidonia plays in the ecosystem of the islands and the importance of working together for its protection: “Although many people do now value the importance of the underwater treasure that is Posidonia, the so-called lungs of the Mediterranean, we are still missing up-to-date empirical data to help us understand what state it is in. At IbizaPreservation we greatly value the work that GEN-GOB has been doing in this regard, and we are delighted to join forces with them again.”
The 2022 research campaign was carried out between April and May, assessing the coverage, density and conservation status of three monitoring stations located throughout Cala Vedella.
The data from 2019-2022 are currently being analysed and a report with the main findings of the study will be published soon.
