Balearic youth mobilize against plastic: the 5th edition of Kilometers of Plastic for Iris kicks off

The more than 1,500 “0 Plastic Warriors” who have fought against plastic pollution have already traveled more than 63,000 km during the last 4 years

Ibiza, 26-01-25 – In the framework of the World Day of Environmental Education, today, the IbizaPreservation foundation has announced that Kilometers of Plastic for Iris , a Balearic initiative that aims to raise awareness among the younger generation about the problem of plastic pollution, will start its fifth edition on February 1.

The project organizers invite students from Secondary, High School, Basic Vocational Training and Intermediate Vocational Training to join the challenge, which consists of organizing excursions and plastic collections in nature with friends and/or family and sharing ideas on how to reduce the plastic pollution on their islands. As a novelty, in this fifth edition of the initiative, promoted on the island by IbizaPreservation and coordinated by 0 Plastic, young people will be able to share their proposals to tackle plastic pollution on their island not only in video format, but also in writing, poems, drawings or artworks, depending on their skills and interests.

To do so, they must register in advance at the link in the Instagram bio @kilometrosdeplasticoporiris or on the website www.0plastic.es and they will receive all the information on the initiative’s bases. IbizaPreservation is once again joining forces with Mallorca Preservation and Menorca Preservation, members of Conservation Collective, a global network of environmental foundations that work for the conservation of nature around the world, to launch this action in memory of Iris Goldsmith, a young environmental activist and daughter of Ben Goldsmith, co-founder of the three entities. The activity, which is funded by the band Depeche Mode and its charitable partner Hublot, channelled through Conservation Collective, aims to involve and give a voice to the new generations to act against plastic pollution in the Mediterranean Sea.

The jury, made up of members of the entities involved, will evaluate the proposals of the “0 Plastic Warriors” who present creative solutions based on the so-called 3 R’s: Recycle, Reuse and above all Reduce, both at an individual level and at a public or business level. There will be up to 18 prizes distributed among the four islands for the best deliverables, consisting of an introductory diving course. In addition, additional prizes will be offered for kayak or paddle surf excursions for the 30 people who travel the most kilometres and, as a novelty this year, also for the students who collect the most kilograms of plastic on their excursions.

The Kilometers of Plastic for Iris project is a clear example of how small actions can have a big impact. At IbizaPreservation we are committed to continuing to promote this initiative, not only because it raises awareness among young people about the fight against plastic pollution, but because it underlines the importance of reducing our waste from the root. It is essential to instil environmental responsibility from an early age to ensure a more sustainable future for our islands and the planet and to listen to the youngest members of the community about how they think we should face these challenges. “, says Inma Saranova, director of the environmental foundation.

For her part, 0 Plastic co-founder Alba Carbonell insists on the inspiring potential of today’s youth: “It is important to give more voice to those young people who are more environmentally conscious so that they can inspire their friends, colleagues and family and encourage them to change their consumption habits by using less plastic, especially single-use plastic.”

Registration will open online from February 1st.
