According to the latest IbizaPreservation Sustainability Report, 98.65% of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) measurements are optimal and there have been no harmful exceedances since 2021

Ibiza, 7 April 2026 – Air quality on the island of Ibiza remained at “very good” levels throughout 2025, with no episodes exceeding the thresholds considered harmful to health for NO2, a toxic gas generated mainly by the combustion of fossil fuels in vehicles (especially diesel) and industry.

This is reflected in the data from the Climate Change and Atmosphere Service of the Balearic Government, analysed by the IbizaPreservation Sustainability Observatory within the framework of its 2025 Ibiza Sustainability Report, currently in the process of preparation and financed by the Consell of Ibiza. The Foundation released the data today on World Health Day.

According to its analysis, 98.65% of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) readings at the Sant Antoni, Can Misses, and Torrent monitoring stations were below 80 μg/m³ during 2025, corresponding to “very good” air quality, while the remaining 1.35% were classified as “good.” Furthermore, since 2021, no episodes have been recorded exceeding the threshold harmful to health , set at 201 μg/m³.

The annual average of NO2 in 2025 was 6.45 μg/m³, This is well below the 30 μg/m³ limit established by current regulations. This pollutant can have negative effects on health and the environment, although the levels recorded in Ibiza remain low, according to the Sustainability Observatory.

Regarding sulfur dioxide (SO2), all stations recorded “very good” values ​​during 2025, with concentrations below 100 μg/m³. This gas, linked to combustion processes, can cause respiratory problems, although on the island it has remained at consistently low levels in recent years.

Meanwhile, tropospheric ozone (O3) recorded six episodes that exceeded the maximum daily limit value of 120 μg/m³, all of them located at the Sant Antoni station.. This secondary pollutant is formed from chemical reactions in the presence of solar radiation, so its concentration can vary depending on weather conditions.

Regarding particulate matter (PM10), 33 exceedances of the daily limit value of 50 μg/m³ were recorded throughout 2025, distributed over 25 days. This figure is close to the legal maximum of 35 exceedances per year. Most of these incidents were recorded primarily at the station in Can Misses during the summer months and may be related to factors such as traffic, Energy activity or the intrusion of airborne dust. In any case, the values ​​remain within the established legal limits.

According to Inés Roig, a technician at the Sustainability Observatory, “It is essential to continue monitoring this indicator to anticipate possible changes and ensure that air quality remains at adequate levels that guarantee environmental quality and health in a context of increasing pressure on the territory.”

The data also reflect a change in the measurement network, as the Dalt Vila urban station stopped operating in March 2025, which limits comparability with previous years in some parameters.

The Observatory emphasised that air quality is a key indicator within the island’s sustainability monitoring system, as it is directly related to the health of the population and the impact of human activities on the environment.
