World Environment Day

To mark World Environment Day on 5th June, IbizaPreservation joined forces with our sister organisations in Mallorca and Menorca to sign the Manifesto for a Sustainable Recovery. The Spain-wide initiative calls for the government’s post-Covid19 stimulus package to be aligned with sustainable policies and the European Green Deal. Its nearly 2000 signatories represent a wide cross-section from civil society, the private sector and the public institutions. Together, IbizaPreservation and the Mallorca and Menorca Preservation Funds form the Balearic chapter of the Conservation Collective, a global network of environmentally focused, philanthropic foundations, of which IbizaPreservation was the first.

Plastic Free webinar

Also on World Environment Day, our colleagues at Plastic Free led the online workshop “How to achieve a plastic-free Ibiza”. Sponsored by the Town Hall of Ibiza, the well-attended event saw Myrto Pispini and Giada Forneris share solutions and advice on waste reduction with local businesses and residents alike.

World Oceans Day

On World Oceans Day on 8th June, our Sustainability Observatory released newly compiled data regarding the state of the waters around Ibiza last year. Unfortunately, it was not good news; analysis by our colleagues at the Water Alliance revealed that the quality of our seas declined by around 24% between 2010 and 2019. What’s more, samples taken from six beaches in 2019 revealed fecal contamination above legal limits, leading to bathing to be temporarily suspended on Talamanca, parts of San Antonio bay, Port de Sant Miquel and Cala Conta. The story made waves (pardon the pun) in the local press and was even picked up by The Sun newspaper in the UK. The waters around Ibiza certainly appear cleaner this year following the long Covid-19 lockdown – let’s hope the 2020 data is an improvement!

“The Future of our Islands”

Our Thursday morning Facebook Live series proved successful with the five interviews by our director, Sandra Benbeniste, racking up hundreds of views and prompting numerous newspaper headlines. We are grateful to Marcos Marí of Trasmapi, Marc Rahola of OD Group, Andrés Rodríguez of Spainmedia, Aniol Esteban of Marilles and Mª Àngels Marí of PIMEEF for taking part, and to the Marine Forum for its support. It was heartening to see our local business leaders so committed to ensuring sustainability remains a key concern alongside economic recovery, as we begin to return to the so-called “new normal”, post-Covid19.

Open Farm Day

Our Ibiza Produce project celebrated Sustainable Gastronomy Day on 18 th June with an Open Farm event at Tierra de Ibiza. Visitors were treated to a guided walk through the farm, met the animals and sampled some of the delicious produce grown there. Our friends from Boxed Ibiza were also on site to showcase their sustainable food delivery service. This was the first in a series of community events being curated by Ibiza Produce, following a highly successful marketing campaign which saw some 2000 islanders sign-up. Click here to sign up for exclusive invitations as well as special member offers and delicious recipes using local produce.

Ronnie’s farm

Following the sad passing of our dear friend and colleague Ronnie Anderson, a GoFundMe campaign has been launched to help with the upkeep of his Ca’n Pere Mussona farm and its animals, while a new home is found for them. Ronnie, a longstanding member of IbizaPreservation’s Advisory Council, was a passionate rare breeds specialist and helped to recover the near-extinct Porc Negre (Formentera Black Pig). The farm is also home to a flock of Ibicenco sheep, as well as several alpacas who help to protect them! The campaign is hoping to raise €12,000 to pay off debts and cover costs over the next few months, while the farm is in transition. All donations are very gratefully received.
