April 11, 2025 – On the occasion of World Recycling Day , Ibiza and Formentera Preservation and Ibiza Blue Challenge are launching for the first time in the Pitiusa Minor the free family gymkhana ‘Formentera Recycles!’ , a fun and educational initiative that will take place on Saturday, May 17, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. , on Ses Illetes beach, near Sa Sèquía .
The activity is supported by the Formentera Council, the band Depeche Mode, and the watch brand Hublot, through their charitable partnership with Conservation Collective. The event also includes support from Trasmapi, Soul Water, Radio Illa, The Other Face , and Gecko Beach Club Formentera.
Registration is now open and can be done free of charge through the Sportmaniacs website until Friday, May 16 at 11:00 a.m. , or until the 100 available spots are filled.
This competition has a similar format to the one held over the last three years in Ibiza, which has been very well received. Its objective is to “raise awareness about recycling and the circular economy in a fun way through an orienteering race,” explains Jordi Salewski, coordinator of the Circular Economy program at the environmental foundation. To do this, teams, made up of two or three people, at least one of them an adult, must solve 12 clues hidden in the surroundings , guided by a map provided by the organizers. This activity is suitable for all ages, with each group adapting the pace to their level.
“We want to celebrate this day by promoting environmental commitment through fun and learning as a family. We’re excited to bring this activity to Formentera for the first time and hope that many local people will participate in defense of the islands’ natural environment and a circular model that minimizes waste and promotes reuse and proper recycling,” says Inma Saranova , director of IbizaPreservation.
In addition to enjoying a day outdoors and raising awareness about recycling, all teams that complete the course will receive a gift of local products . The three fastest teams will also receive a basket of local products , and excursions will be raffled off among all participants, courtesy of the event’s partners.
“The goal is twofold: to offer a fun family experience and to promote values such as sustainability and respect for our environment,” highlights Juanjo Serra , CEO of Ibiza Blue Challenge , the entity responsible for the gymkhana’s logistics.
The event organizers also announced that refreshment points will be set up with recyclable materials and separate containers to ensure responsible waste management throughout the event. They also invite residents of both Formentera and Ibiza to join in. Thanks to the collaboration of Trasmapi, participants from Ibiza will receive a 50% discount on transportation, which can be combined with other discounts, such as the resident discount.
