The environmental foundation is hosting a talk this Friday with comic book author Miguel Brieva, in conjunction with the launch of his latest book: “In Search of a Future Worth Wanting to Live In”
Ibiza, 08/04/24 – “In times of environmental uncertainty, it’s essential to adopt a proactive approach that breaks away from inaction.” This is the view of Inma Saranova, director of IbizaPreservation, a perspective that closely aligns with that of renowned comic artist Miguel Brieva (Seville, 1974), the central figure of the foundation’s upcoming community event. The event will feature the presentation of Brieva’s latest book, “In Search of a Future Worth Wanting to Live In” (Astiberri, 2023), which will take place on Friday 12th April at 7:00 PM at Sa Cultural bookshop in Ibiza Town. The author will attend in order to engage in a productive dialogue with the audience.
“Climate change, energy crises, technology addiction, rampant consumerism… Our way of life is leading us inevitably toward collapse and extinction, but we’ve internalised and normalised it. We’ve bought into the narrative,” states the synopsis of this book. Yet, despite the grim outlook, the book offers hope: “In these urgent and troubled times, we still have a powerful tool at our disposal—our hallmark as human beings: imagination.” And it’s precisely the imagination of Miguel Brieva—author of iconic works in socially engaged Spanish comics such as Money, Welcome to the World, and The Great Human Adventure—that serves as the potent force in breaking through resignation, offering a new collective narrative in “In Search of a Future Worth Wanting to Live In”.
According to IbizaPreservation, the presentation of this book is the perfect opportunity to engage in a dialogue with the author and attendees, aimed at exploring solutions to the urgent environmental challenges faced in Ibiza and Formentera.
“While it’s true that we are confronting significant challenges and legitimate fears about ecological collapse, it’s a social responsibility to start considering viable alternatives for moving towards a sustainable future,” said Saranova, the foundation’s director. She added, “It’s understandable that fear of collapse can lead to paralysis, but we must channel that energy into creative and pragmatic solutions. That’s why we believe Miguel Brieva and his book can help us challenge the status quo and explore new ways of living in harmony with our planet. From local initiatives to global policies, every action counts in our journey towards sustainability.”
Brieva explains, “For decades, we’ve been resigned to swimming against the current, worn down by the relentless pace of life and the barrage of worrying news. It seems we’ve forgotten—or pushed aside—our ability to imagine, which is our most powerful evolutionary tool. The political and social consequences of this loss are profound. Yet, that creative force still lies dormant within us. Only by tapping into it with boldness, inspiration, and a deep commitment to life as our guiding principle can we break free from this paralysis, both human and systemic.”
This Friday’s event will be a conversation between the author and Inma Saranova, drawing from the book’s cartoons, posters, and illustrations, followed by an open dialogue with the audience. The goal is to encourage everyone attending Sa Cultural to rethink how we can stop resigning ourselves to a dystopian future and begin working together to envision the future we want to live in.
