Ibiza, July 3, 2026 – The Ibiza & Formentera Preservation Sustainability Observatory has analyzed the latest data from the Self-Consumption Registry of the Directorate General of Energy and Climate Change of the Government of the Balearic Islands, which reflect the consolidation of photovoltaic self-consumption on the island during 2025. Ibiza reached the highest number of tourist destinations last year for the first time. 3,134 registered photovoltaic self-consumption installations and the estimated electricity production through these facilities it was almost four times higher than that of the grid-connected photovoltaic parks on the island. Thus, among 2019 and 2025Ibiza went from having 35 photovoltaic self-consumption installations to reach the 3.134, while the installed capacity increased more than 67 times, moving from 0.45 MW to 30.16 MW. During 2025 joined 429 new facilities, a 27% less than the 589 new ones registered during the previous year. During its evolution, the installed capacity continued to grow and went from 25.9 MW in 2024 to 30.16 MW in 2025, an increase of 16.4%.

The Ibiza Sustainability Observatory estimates that self-consumption installations generated around 38,610.8 MWh of electricity during 2025, compared to the 33,163.9 MWh estimated in 2024 and the 588.2 MWh recorded in 2019.. Most of this energy is used for self-consumption by the owners of the installations, although an unquantified fraction is fed into the electricity grid. In comparison, The photovoltaic parks connected to the grid produced 10,414.1 MWh during 2025Therefore, generation through self-consumption was almost four times higher. All this data is part of the Ibiza Sustainability Report 2025, currently in the process of preparation and fully financed by the Consell Insular d’Eivissa.

“The expansion of these self-consumption facilities helps reduce dependence on electricity generated from fossil fuels and promotes greater use of an abundant renewable resource on the island, such as solar energy, thus moving towards the decarbonization of the island’s energy system ,” explains Elisa Langley, coordinator of the Observatory, who also highlights the role that public aid has played in promoting the expansion of self-consumption in recent years.

Sant Josep leads self-consumption

Analysis of data from the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge’s self-consumption electricity registry also shows that 70.2% of new installations registered in 2025 were located on urban land , compared to 28.9% on rural land and 0.9% on industrial land. Furthermore, smaller installations clearly predominate: over 82% have a capacity of 10 kW or less, while installations between 10 and 100 kW already represent 17% of the total. compared to 9% recorded in 2023. Conversely, facilities with a Power outputs equal to or greater than 100 kW continue to be very small and represented less than 0.5% of the total in 2025, with no significant changes since 2022.

At the territorial level, the growth of self-consumption has been widespread across the island’s five municipalities. Sant Josep de sa Talaia leads in the number of installations, with 978 registered up to 2025, followed by Santa Eulària des Riu (763), Sant Antoni de Portmany (496), Sant Joan de Labritja (215), and Ibiza Town (167). According to the Observatory, these differences highlight the need to design specific strategies that allow progress toward a balanced energy transition adapted to the characteristics of each municipality.

“Although the evolution is very positive, there is still ample room for improvement, especially in the implementation of installations in collective residential buildings, the development of energy communities, the reduction of energy consumption and the application of energy efficiency measures. “All these aspects must be part of a comprehensive strategy to support the island’s energy transition,” Langley points out. The coordinator also emphasizes that one of the main challenges remains facilitating the access to self-consumption, since the initial investment needed to install these systems continues to be a barrier for many people, businesses and homeowners’ associations.
