One minute for your island
We’re delighted to present a brand new competition for 15- to 18-year-olds living in Ibiza or Formentera. One minute for your island was created in conjunction with The Conservation Collective environmental network we are part of, in memory of Iris Goldsmith, the daughter of our co-founder Ben. Iris died tragically in an accident in 2019 at the age of 15. She was passionate about the environment and, as a tribute to her, this new award aims to empower young people her age in their own efforts to restore and protect their surroundings. All they have to do is submit a video of one minute or under before 31 March, laying out an environmental challenge facing their island and suggesting an innovative solution to help fix it. There’s a fantastic prize worth €500 up for grabs, so if you or your friends have children who are eligible, please encourage them to apply and help us to spread the word! MARE winners

Meanwhile, another competition we are proud to be part of has produced some fantastic winners. MARE, which launched last year, seeks to promote the conservation of the Balearic Sea through the medium of photography and video. Nearly 900 photographs were submitted by 120 participants, including some incredibly impressive entries in the under 18s category. Congratulations to the winners; do take a look at their gallery.
Offset carbon emissions for free!

Did you know that the average person in Spain is responsible for emitting 5.89 tonnes of CO2 annually? In Ibiza it’s even higher, at 6.26 tonnes per year. We’ve teamed up with the green-tech platform UCapture in a great new initiative that helps you to minimise the island’s carbon emissions when you shop online. Almonds in bloom

Ibiza’s famous almond groves are in blossom currently – a particularly delightful moment in the island’s calendar. However, the pretty pinkish-white flowers are sadly becoming fewer and further between with every passing year. That’s because the trees have a natural lifecycle of around 70 years and need to be replaced every few decades in order to remain productive – something that has stopped happening so much since tourism became the island’s main source of income. Almonds have been cultivated on Ibiza since Phoenician times around 2500 years ago and the varieties grown here are known for their high quality and sweet, intense flavour.
