Photovoltaic energy produced on the island fell by 3.7% last year and only covered 1% of demand, according to the IbizaPreservation Sustainability Observatory
Ibiza, March 5, 2026 – Energy consumption on the island of Ibiza reached 1,022,543 MWh in 2025, its highest value since comparable records began, representing a 6.6% increase compared to 2024 (958,755 MWh) . At the same time, renewable energy production remains stagnant, and in the case of photovoltaics, it fell by 3.7% in 2025 compared to 2024, covering barely 1% of the island’s total demand.
This is reflected in the data from the Balearic Islands Statistics Institute (IBESTAT) , based on information from Red Eléctrica Española, analyzed by the IbizaPreservation Sustainability Observatory and made public on the occasion of World Energy Efficiency Day.
According to Elisa Langley , coordinator of the Sustainability Observatory, “this new all-time high is not an isolated event, but rather the continuation of a sustained trend of increasing electricity consumption on the island.” In this regard, she points out that “on World Energy Efficiency Day, Ibiza reaching record consumption levels while local renewable energy remains stagnant is bad news because it perpetuates dependence on fossil fuels, responsible for more than 75% of global greenhouse gas emissions, and demonstrates that we are neither reducing demand nor replacing dirty energy with clean sources. Therefore, we are not making the necessary efforts to curb climate change and protect the ecosystems of our territory and the rest of the planet.”
The data, collected as part of the Ibiza Sustainability Report 2025 , currently being prepared and fully funded by the Consell Insular d’Eivissa (Ibiza Island Council), also highlight that the island’s energy system continues to depend primarily on the Mallorca-Ibiza electricity link. In 2025, 60.9% of total consumption (622,524 MWh) was supplied through this interconnection, while the remaining 38.1% (400,019 MWh) was generated at the Ibiza thermal power plant. Although local production increased by 20.3% in 2025 compared to 2024 , this increase does not imply a structural transformation of the island’s energy model.
Electricity production on the island continues to depend almost exclusively on fossil fuels : in 2025 , 68.1% of local generation was obtained through engines powered by natural gas and 29.3% through turbines also powered by natural gas.
The contribution of renewable energy remains very limited, with solar photovoltaic production in 2025 equivalent to just 2.5% of total production. Meanwhile, biogas generation reached 390 MWh , 60.9% less than the previous year , representing only 0.1% of the total .
If we consider that some of the electricity reaching Ibiza via the connection with Mallorca also comes from renewable sources generated within the Balearic and mainland systems , the total percentage of renewable electricity consumed on the island reaches 15.4% in 2025. However, this figure does not reflect an increase in local renewable production, but rather the share of clean energy in the external electricity system on which Ibiza largely depends.
“The data clearly shows a disconnect between the growth in consumption and the actual progress of the energy transition on the island,” Langley adds. “If demand continues to rise and local renewable production doesn’t accelerate , dependence on fossil fuels and external supply will remain structural , hindering the achievement of the climate targets set for 2030,” he laments.
The Balearic regulatory framework sets the objective that renewable energies represent 35% of final consumption in 2030, while the European objective for that same year is 42%, goals that demonstrate the gap between the current situation and the energy transition commitments.
The Observatory warns that maintaining high electricity consumption generated from fossil fuels means continuing to increase emissions and environmental pressure in a particularly vulnerable territory like Ibiza. “Continuing to depend primarily on fossil fuels moves us further away from climate goals and increases our exposure to environmental and economic impacts ,” says Langley, who emphasizes that “it is essential to strengthen energy efficiency , establish concrete demand reduction targets, and decisively accelerate the deployment of renewable energies if we want to move towards a more self-sufficient and resilient system.”
