Change the model or change the climate? IbizaPreservation invites the public to debate the future of the island for Earth Day

Pau de Vílchez, president of the Energy Transition and Climate Change Commission of the Balearic Government, will lead a talk at Ebusus next Monday 24th April.

Ibiza, 20/04/2023 – This Saturday Earth Day is celebrated, and to mark this anniversary the IbizaPreservation foundation is inviting the public to join a talk at Ebusus Cultural and Artistic Society next Monday, 24th April. The discussion will centre on whether a responsible tourism model is possible in the context of the climate emergency.

The speaker, Pau de Vílchez, is professor of Public Law at the University of the Balearic Islands and president of the Energy Transition and Climate Change Commission of the Balearic Government.  The discussion will be introduced and moderated by the coordinator of the IbizaPreservation Sustainability Observatory, Itziar Arratibel, who recently joined the Commission.

The event is part of a calendar of community events promoted by the foundation for its 15th anniversary.

“It is our intention to energise the public debate and find solutions to the major socio-environmental issues affecting our islands, which is why we find it so interesting to address the tourism issue within the framework of the climate crisis together with experts the calibre of Pau de Vílchez,” says Inma Saranova, director of IbizaPreservation.  She also called on everyone keen to protect the environment to attend the meeting and sent a message of solidarity to Karen Kileen, the founder of Extinction Rebellion Ibiza, recently charged for a protest against climate inaction in front of the Spanish Congress in Madrid: “We are running out of time and we must be brave like Karen and all the people who work to reverse a climate crisis that affects us all.”

The talk, made possible thanks to the collaboration of the Ebusus Cultural and Artistic Society and OD Hotels, will be bilingual in Catalan and Spanish and will take place at Ebusus in Vara de Rey, Ibiza, from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. It is open to the public; no prior registration is necessary.
