We are delighted to share exciting news of a significant win in our long-running campaign to stop oil and gas exploration in the Spanish Mediterranean.
The Mar Blava Alliance, which IbizaPreservation created in 2013, succeeded yesterday in winning cross-party support in the Spanish Parliament for a bill that will ban prospecting and exploration throughout Spanish Mediterranean waters.
The bill will now proceed through Parliament and should be signed into law in around a year’s time. Although work continues to ensure that the new law is not watered down, this is nonetheless a huge step forward and is thanks to the tireless efforts of the technical secretariat of Mar Blava and its members.
We are proud to have been on the Board of Directors of this pioneering alliance from the very start. An initiative which began with a focus on stopping exploration in the Balearic Sea, Mar Blava now numbers 120 members right across Spain, from civil society to public and private sectors, all united in the common goal of keeping our Mediterranean waters clean.
