Ibiza, July 14, 2026 – The Ibiza & Formentera Preservation Sustainability Observatory has analyzed the latest data published by the Department of Energy Transition of the Balearic Islands Government , which shows that the island’s greenhouse gas emissions increased by 61.3% during 2025 compared to the previous year. The main factor in this increase was the higher consumption of fossil fuels , and within this category, Jet A-1 , the kerosene used by commercial aircraft, was once again the fuel that generated the most emissions on the island, far exceeding the other fuels analyzed.

Given these results, Elisa Langley , coordinator of the Ibiza Sustainability Observatory, warns that the island is still not progressing at the necessary pace to meet the emissions reduction targets set by Balearic Law 10/2019 on climate change and energy transition, which establishes a 40% reduction by 2030. “We see no signs of emissions reduction, despite the targets set by the Balearic Climate Change Law, but rather a significant increase. The data shows that we must continue to make progress in reducing the impact of the island’s mobility model and accelerate the transition to less polluting alternatives ,” she points out.

In total, Ibiza emitted 1,593.5 kilotonnes of CO₂ equivalent during 2025 —the unit used to measure on the same scale the impact on climate change of all greenhouse gases—, compared to the 987.9 kt recorded in 2024.

The Observatory’s analysis shows that the increase in emissions was primarily driven by fossil fuel consumption, responsible for 82.2% of total emissions recorded on the island in 2025. Collectively, these fuels—such as aviation kerosene, diesel, and gasoline—generated 1,310.6 kt of CO₂ , 74.9% more than the previous year. This data is part of the Ibiza Sustainability Report 2025 , currently being prepared and fully funded by the Consell Insular d’Eivissa (Island Council of Ibiza ).

Aviation kerosene leads emissions

Within this group, Jet A-1 , the fuel used by airplanes, was once again the fuel that generated the most emissions. In 2025, it was responsible for 786.1 kt of CO₂ , representing 60% of emissions from fossil fuel consumption. According to the Observatory, this figure is related to the volume of fuel refueled at Ibiza Airport, which has increased due to guidelines aimed at preventing so-called ” tankering .” This practice involves loading additional fuel to also carry part of the next flight and avoid refueling at the destination airport. Although it may be for economic or operational reasons, transporting this extra fuel makes the aircraft heavier, increases fuel consumption, and generates more emissions.

The second largest contributor was diesel A , used mainly by vehicles and recreational boats, which generated 260.4 kt of CO₂ and accounted for 19.9% ​​of emissions from fossil fuel consumption in 2025. This was followed by 95-octane gasoline, with 121.8 kt (9.3%), and diesel B, with 82.9 kt (6.3%). The remaining fuels had a significantly smaller contribution.

While fossil fuel emissions saw a sharp increase, emissions associated with electricity generation had a much smaller impact on the overall increase. Collectively, they reached 282.9 kt of CO₂ in 2025 , 18.6% more than in 2024. Of these, 260.7 kt came from the Ibiza thermal power plant and 22.1 kt from electricity imported via the Mallorca-Ibiza power link.

“The data clearly shows that fossil fuel consumption remains the main source of greenhouse gas emissions in Ibiza, surpassing those associated with electricity generation. This indicates that we have not yet managed to reduce the impact of transport , both to and from the island,” explains Langley. “The increase in the consumption of aviation fuel and diesel A, used mainly by vehicles and recreational boats, reflects the worrying continued growth in mobility and tourist traffic, but it also highlights that we still lack non-fossil alternatives capable of meeting the island’s transport needs. Both issues must be addressed strategically and jointly to achieve the necessary reduction in emissions,” he adds.
