Ibizan artist Maya Vericad has created a temporary mural today, using 121 kilograms of plastic bottle tops, approximately 63,000 units, collected by IbizaPreservation with the support of the local community. The action, on World Recycling Day, aims to raise awareness about plastic pollution and inspire the community to reduce their reliance on plastic and embrace more sustainable practices.
The installation, a 50-square-metre mermaid surrounded by the sea and Posidonia, draws inspiration from the sculptural work of the renowned Ibizan ceramist ‘Gabrielet’. It was created and exhibited at the Baluard de Santa Llúcia, thanks to the collaboration of the Town Hall of Ibiza.
This initiative, along with the children’s show ‘The Magic of Recycling’, which took place last Monday, is part of a series of actions funded by the British band Depeche Mode. The band provide financial support to tackle the issue of plastic pollution through their charitable collaboration with luxury watch brand Hublot, as part of their global Memento Mori tour. The funds are channelled through Conservation Collective, a global network of environmental foundations of which IbizaPreservation is a member.
Additionally, this activity has also had received support of Trasmapi, Soul Water, Morna International College, the Oli restaurant, Fundación Pacha, La Sirena and OD Hotels.
